Fact-Checking @thefoodbabe

The Food Babe recently shared a reel breaking down her thoughts on butter at the grocery store. This video gained quite a bit of traction on Instagram. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was time to do a little myth-busting on her butter opinions. Below are the six myths from the video and my response to them.

1) Everything is a Factory Farms

Yea, that isn’t the case. 97% of dairy farms in the United States are family-owned and operated.

2) Cows are fed candy

While that is not entirely wrong, that isn’t the whole story. Cows may be fed many unconventional foods to upcycle food and reduce food waste. Many dairies also work with nutritionists to ensure cows get all the proper nutrients.

3) Cows are full of harmful synthetic hormones.

The synthetic hormone in question is rBST, an FDA-approved hormone. Dairies are phasing out this hormone, and milk from cows treated by rBST is not on the shelves.

4) Dairy contains antibiotics

NOPE. All milk has to be tested 3+ times for antibiotics before it hits the shelves.

5) Organic food is healthier.

The word organic refers to a farming practice, not a health stamp. Nutritionally organic and traditional food has the same value, and organic food is also treated with pesticides, just ones labeled acceptable for organic.

6) Not all butter is safe for consumption.

All butter is safe. If it is on your grocery store shelf, it is safe, and no matter the label, it has been held to the same health standards.

One of the greatest things about grocery stores is that we have the option to choose the type of food we consume. This blog does not tell you what to do but instead gives you more information to help you make a more informed decision.
